After studying my own mistakes and solid choices over the past few years I’ve developed a Hustler’s method of do’s and don’ts for drafting a competitive fantasy football squad that will (with a little bit of luck) take your already competitive team to the top.

1. Do draft a running back with a big offensive line and great passing game. This will open up the middle for big runs and also open up the edges for dump passes, providing your back with increased opportunities for receptions and room to break that big gain. After all, we all crave TD’s and 100 yard games, don’t we?

2. Don’t draft a quarterback too early because there will be a shortage of good running backs and receivers (especially in leagues with 10 or more teams). Save it for round 2 or 3 if your going for a big name quarterback like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning.

3. Don’t over use the waiver with the intent on preventing others from getting a certain player, focus on your own team and watch your team pull together in the end. Focusing on preventing someone else from being productive leads to a lack of productivity for both parties.

4. Do pay attention to preseason and catch glimpses of rookie running backs that will play behind aging running backs to get a feel for that diamond in the rough that only you see gleaming. Your one injury away from having an impact running back for nothing. Remember Jamal Charles and Rashard Mendenhall?

5. Don’t spend too much time second guessing yourself because the guru predicts an unproven player to have a breakout game when instinctively your gut tells you different. Follow your gut and remember the guru is an algorithm that is computer generated using data, but if a player has limited data then it is more likely to be wrong than right. In other words, don’t believe in guru miracle picks off the waiver wire. Your better off going to Vegas, where at least you get free drinks from a waitress with big boobies when you lose. So don’t be a boob and win your money back this year @$$hole!
