Waiver Wire Week 10
Another week and yet another loss by the Bengals. Really…I’m going to open this week’s edition by talking about the Bengals? I mean, they aren’t really even worth talking about other than T.O. Sure he drops some passes now and then but he’s been worth the contract they gave him. It’s too bad that most of the rest of the team isn’t performing. There’s too much talent there to be this bad and there is no way you can win many games by only playing one half of the game.
There’s always next year right? Ahh, this must be what it’s like to be a Cubs fan. At least I only have to sit through 16 games so maybe I’m luckier than a Cubs fan. That’s….just….sad.
There were several close games that were fun to watch last week. And a few guys even got to play kicker for the first time. Wes Welker kicked an extra point and made it. And the Lions let Ndamukong Suh attempt an extra point. I can’t believe they didn’t have a better option but Suh had a decent form. But if he had hit his extra point, there’s no need for overtime and the Lions win.
Even the Bengals made it a game at the end and brought some excitement. If they had only decided to actually play in the first half, that game would have been much better. Don’t worry, I’m done talking about the Bengals for today. It has me depressed now anyway so let’s get to this week’s pickups and hopefully that will cheer me up.
Jacoby Ford (WR, Raiders) – Ford returned a kick 94 yards for a touchdown and also caught 6 passes for 148 yards. He’s pretty much the reason the Raiders won last week. But this is the Raiders and you never know who’s going to have the big day on a given week. So I wouldn’t drop any big names for him or anything but if you’ve been hit with injuries and you need someone to fill in, he’s a guy that has a lot of upside.
Reggie Bush (RB, Saints) – Someone may have dropped him because it’s been a long time since he’s played. He still won’t play until the end of the month but if you can stash him, it may pay off. No one else is playing well at RB for the Saints and who knows when Pierre Thomas will be well enough to play again. Bush would get carries and you know he catches passes too so he’s even better in a PPR (point per reception) league.
David Garrard (QB, Jaguars) – Pretty much any QB facing the Texans and their league-worst pass defense is worth a pickup but Garrard’s last game out brought 5 touchdowns. I wouldn’t expect that again but he’s actually played pretty well this season. In fact, he has a higher passer rating than Peyton Manning so far. Granted, it’s barely higher but still. I doubt he mentions that fact when he tells people.
Vince Young (QB, Titans) – Young has a higher passer rating than Garrard (and everyone else not named Michael Vick). His receivers have had some fairly big days so far and they added Randy Moss. He also faces a lot of bad defenses against the pass for the rest of the season.
Mike Goodson/Tyrell Sutton (RB, Panthers) – DeAngelo Williams may be able to go this week but if he can’t, it’s going to be one of these guys. Sutton got hurt last week so you’ll have to wait until later in the week to see who’s going to get the start. The Panthers are terrible and that’s probably an understatement. But with their options at QB, they may just have to run a bunch.
Buccaneers defense – Speaking of the Panthers, they play Tampa Bay this week. Sure, they aren’t the greatest at defending the run. And maybe one of the Panther running backs manages to rack up some yards but Jimmy Clausen or Tony Pike is going to be at QB so there is huge potential for turnovers.
Arrelious Benn (WR, Buccaneers) – So far, Mike Williams is probably the only Bucs receiver owned but Benn could start to see more action. Josh Freeman isn’t afraid to throw and they couldn’t run last week so Benn could see more passes his way. He made a great catch for a touchdown last week. It was his only catch of the game but he made it count.
Because of injuries, Shaun Hill (QB, Lions) and Blair White (WR, Colts) could see more action this week. Hill looked pretty good before Stafford came back and if he can play this week, he may pick up where he left off. As for Blair White, Austin Collie has a concussion and Anthony Gonzalez is hurt yet again so he’ll be the slot receiver this week.
Mike Thomas (WR, Jaguars) has been mentioned before and he plays the Texans this week. Odds are, Jaguar receivers are going to be pulling in a lot of passes this week. If Steve Johnson (WR, Bills) is still available in your league, go get him. I picked him up several weeks ago and he’s really helped my team. He had caught touchdowns in 5 straight games and even though he didn’t have one last week, he still caught 11 passes for 145 yards.
And finally, Sidney Rice (WR, Vikings) and Vincent Jackson (WR, Chargers) should both be back pretty soon. Both guys are capable of putting up points, especially Jackson. The Chargers are just sending out one unknown receiver after another and these guys are scoring points. If they can do this, imagine what Jackson could do.
