Glory Daze

Glory Daze is a new hour-long comedy on TBS. It airs Tuesday nights at 10pm and premiered last night. I had read about the show but forgot it was coming on and just happened to see it on the guide when I was setting my DVR for the night so I recorded it.

The show focuses on five freshmen starting out on their college experience at a fictional Indiana University. On a side note, this is yet another show that is set in Indiana. We now have “Parks and Recreation” and “The Middle”. And now this show. Am I living in the “cool” place to be or is it just that living in Indiana brings its’ own comedy? I mean, we do have some big city living but we also have the country and the trailer parks. So maybe we’re not cool, maybe we’re just easy to make fun of. But screw it, I live here so I’m going with the fact that we’re cool.

This series takes place in 1986 so if you’re old enough to remember, you’re going to have a few flashbacks as you see the clothes and hair and hear the music. And yes, I do like 80’s music. The five main characters all have their own thing. Joel is a good kid who gets dropped off at college by his parents and told to “keep his eye on the prize”. He intends to study and stay away from partying. Brian is a jock on the baseball team with a fastball in the 90’s. He doesn’t enjoy hanging out with the other jocks and befriends the other four. Brian’s jock roommate has pictures of baseball players all over the room and Brian finds it hard to bring girls back and perform while they are all watching and smiling at him. Chang is an asian kid that doesn’t want to join the asian fraternity as his father requested. But he finds that the fraternity is a lot cooler than he thought. Eli is the short kid that always talks about women and sex, even though he’s actually a virgin and knows nothing about either. And finally, Jason is the preppy kid that brings his girlfriend to college with him and talked her out of going to Yale so that they can be together.

They all go out together one night and visit the fraternities but end up at Omega Sigma and fall in love. The members of Omega Sigma aren’t the best students but they love to party and have fun. Joel falls for a girl on campus and finds that she hangs out at the Omega Sigma house a lot so he thinks they’ll get more time together if he joins. He then discovers that she has a boyfriend and he happens to run the Omega Sigma house.

There’s even a paranoid teacher on campus played by Tim Meadows. He makes fun of Joel on the first day of class because Joel is nervous when a pretty girl sits next to him. And he pops up on campus now and then for a quick bit of humor.

Several things in the show seem to mimic “Animal House” but it’s still funny, even if it is the second time around. There seems to be a little “American Pie” thrown in as well but it all makes for good humor. There wasn’t much drama involved in the first episode and the story seems pretty wide open but it had enough laughs that I’ll tune in again and see where they’re going to take this. It’s funny enough to see how the characters dress and talk and laugh about how we used to do the same thing. So take a walk down memory lane and check out “Glory Daze”.
