Fantasy Football — 02 December 2010

Well, I got to watch football all day on Sunday and not see a Bengals loss. Sure, that’s because they lost on Thursday last week but let’s not argue. Still, getting to watch three games on Thursday and a full day on Sunday was awesome.

Several games came down to the wire and eight games were decided by 5 points or less. The Bills almost beat the Steelers. And they should have won. Steve Johnson (who I started) caught a touchdown and then dropped it. Or maybe God knocked it out of his hands, I’m not sure which. He sure blames God though. I always like to watch the Steelers lose so that touchdown catch would have given me fantasy points and a happy moment with a Steelers loss.

And in the Titans/Texans game, Cortland Finnegan pissed off Andre Johnson so much that Johnson decided to whip his ass on the field. Now, Finnegan is known for this stuff so it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it. And Johnson is one of the nicer guys in the league so for him to get that angry, Finnegan really had to have done something. Johnson got a standing ovation and even got a game ball. Even though Finnegan probably deserves a beating, you just can’t fight on the field. I mean, this isn’t hockey. I’m a bit surprised that neither player got suspended and all they got was a fairly small fine. With all the fines and cracking down on big hits, I thought the league might take the opportunity to make an example here.

We’re almost to fantasy playoff time. Hopefully your teams are doing well and that you’re in the playoff race. Several guys have gotten injured in the last few weeks so if you need some fill-in players, you might look at one of the guys below. I’ve mentioned a few before but several of them had nice games last week and are still available in a ton of leagues.

Brian Westbrook (RB, 49ers) – The 49ers like to run and now Frank Gore has a fractured hip. Westbrook got his first real action of the season and responded with 136 yards rushing and a touchdown. He doesn’t face any really tough defenses going forward so if he stays healthy (and that’s always a big IF with Westbrook), he could really help your team in the fantasy playoffs.

Matt Cassel (QB, Chiefs) – He’s been mentioned before but he just tossed 4 touchdowns last week and he hasn’t scored less than 17 points since Week 8. An added bonus is that he faces some poor defenses in the next few weeks.

Toby Gerhart (RB, Vikings) – This all depends on how bad Adrian Peterson’s ankle is. Right now, they are saying it’s a sprain but after he went out, Gerhart came in and ran for 76 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings play the Bills this week so someone should have a good rushing day. If the Vikings decide to rest Peterson, Gerhart could come up big.

Jonathan Stewart (RB, Panthers) – Mike Goodson is still playing well but the Panthers should run enough for two guys. Stewart ran for 98 yards last week on 12 carries. If he continues to break off runs like that, he won’t need a ton of carries to do some damage. Plus, the Panthers passing game sucks.

Ben Obomanu (WR, Seahawks) – Mike Williams had to sit out and Obomanu had 5 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown. He’s averaged about 5 catches a game over the last three games and if Mike Williams has to sit again this week, Obomanu may have another nice game.

Jason Avant (WR, Eagles) – Avant just had 8 catches for 83 yards but all you really need to know is that he plays the Texans this week. The Texans typically give up a lot of points to wide receivers so if you need someone to fill a flex spot, Avant deserves a look.

Maurice Morris (RB, Lions) – I mentioned him last week and he didn’t disappoint, rushing for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns. He runs and he catches passes which makes him pretty valuable, especially in that Lions offense.

Blair White (WR, Colts) – Colts receivers are still all kinds of banged up and Blair may be the only real healthy one left. White has 3 touchdowns in his last two games and even though Peyton Manning seems to be throwing to the other team a lot, he’s still going to keep throwing.

Kevin Boss (TE, Giants) – Another mention from last week that played well with 74 yards and a touchdown. The Giants are still missing a few receivers so Boss should still find himself seeing more looks.

Jacoby Ford (WR, Raiders) – If your league gives points for return yards, Ford just returned one for 101 yards and a score. He also happened to pull in 4 catches for 108 yards and another touchdown. Granted, he plays for the Raiders but he’s making a habit of pulling in some tough catches.

Legedu Naanee (WR, Chargers) – Vincent Jackson made his return and lasted all of two plays. And yes, I started him. Oh, and yes, he cost me a game. So Naanee because the No. 2 receiver in a Chargers offense that puts up numbers. Rivers just keeps piling up the passing yards no matter who is out there so the opportunity for a big game will be there for Naanee.

Brian Hartline (WR, Dolphins) – Hartline doesn’t catch many touchdowns (just 1 all season) but he does consistently catch at least 70 yards a week. Brandon Marshall looks like he’ll sit out this week against the Browns so Hartline should see even more passes.

That’s all I have so good luck this week and I hope you can grab a playoff spot or put yourself in a position for a bye week. I was able to pick up Mike Tolbert in one league and Brian Westbrook in two others so I’m hoping they help my teams to a better playoff position.
