Fantasy Football — 15 December 2010

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably made it into the fantasy playoffs. Or you’re really going to try and win the consolation bracket. And if you’re out of the playoffs and reading this, you just aren’t ready to give up fantasy football for the season. I don’t blame you, fantasy sports are fun. But if you aren’t in a basketball league, you’ve got to wait until baseball season starts.

A few of my leagues have already started the playoffs. I had a first-round bye in one and advanced to the semifinals in two others. But for most leagues, this will be your opening round. And while some people can just choose their best players and submit that roster, others will make several changes to the lineup before finalizing it for the week. Some of that may depend on the size of your teams. I have one league with a small team so it’s pretty easy to set that lineup. But a few other leagues have about six bench spots and that opens up a lot of decisions to be made.

Your teams should be pretty set unless you have some iffy matchups. As for injuries, I think there were just a few last week. Antonio Gates may be shut down for the next few weeks and that will hurt a lot of people (myself included). Aaron Rodgers has a concussion so he may not play this week and losing your star QB in the opening round of the playoffs sucks.

Some of these names will be repeats but most of them are still available in a ton of leagues. And if you need help this week, you’re probably only needing one or two players at the most. Several of the players I’ve mentioned over the last couple of weeks are gone now so I’ll try to list some that I’m pretty sure are left. So let’s get to this week’s list.

Tim Hightower (RB, Cardinals) – Chances are, someone dropped Hightower in your league. I own him in at least one league and even though I never start him, I haven’t dropped him. I kept hoping he’d finally break out, especially with Beanie Wells sucking all year. Well, Hightower just had 148 yards and 2 scores. And the Cards play the Panthers this week so they should be ahead and could run a lot.

Mike Goodson (RB, Panthers) – Goodson is still available in several leagues. And even though Jonathan Stewart is back, Carolina will be running a lot. They might as well, they can’t really pass. Goodson just had 70 yards and a touchdown and he’s had either 100 yards or a touchdown in his last five games.

Jason Campbell (QB, Raiders) – You probably aren’t looking for a QB in the playoffs, unless you own Aaron Rodgers. But if you do need one, there should be a few available. Campbell is averaging about 17 fantasy points a game, except for one bad game against the Steelers. He just had 324 yards and 2 tds against the Jags and faces Denver’s bad pass defense. Campbell has faced Denver once already this year and had, you guessed it, 17 points.

Kerry Collins (QB, Titans) – Collins just had a nice game (244 yards and 3 tds) but, more importantly, he faces the Texans this week. We all know the Texans have a terrible pass defense so Collins has a great shot to have a nice game. Kenny Britt returned last week and now has another week of conditioning so he should be a little better.

Rashad Jennings (RB, Jaguars) – The Jaguars are running a ton lately and Jennings has scored a touchdown in three straight games. He could be a decent bet to get another touchdown but you never know how many yards he’ll get. If you own Jones-Drew on your team, it might not be a bad idea to pick up Jennings just in case MoJo gets hurt.

Brian Westbrook (RB, 49ers) – Westbrook is a better pickup if you’re in a PPR league. He only had 23 yards rushing but did have 6 catches for 87 yards and a score. The 49ers play San Diego this week so they may not be able to run very successfully. If that’s the case, Westbrook may be able to haul in more catches.

Arrelious Benn (WR, Buccaneers) – Josh Freeman has had a really nice season and so has Mike Williams. Benn has had moments and could be coming into his own. He just had 4 catches for 122 yards and the Bucs play the Lions this week. Doesn’t everyone play well against the Lions?

Owen Daniels (TE, Texans) – Daniels has been out with an injury for awhile so he was likely dropped in many leagues. He came back last week and had 5 catches for 91 yards. He dropped a few passes but looked healthy so he could be even better this week.

Rob Gronkowski (TE, Patriots) – He doesn’t get the most catches or yards but only Antonio Gates and Mercedes Lewis have more touchdowns this season. Gronkowski is now in the top 10 for tight ends so if your starter is hurt or has a terrible matchup, you might see if he’s available.

If you’re in the playoffs, good luck. Unless you’re one of the teams I’m facing, of course. If you’re not in the playoffs, good luck in the consolation bracket or enjoy the offseason. It’s never too early to start creating some rankings for next year.
