Your Highness

“Get your quest on and prepare yourself for a serious tale and some other serious shit.” This is how “Your Highness” is introduced to us in the opening credits in dialogue. Universal pictures has come up with a doozy of a comedy and it will make you eyes pop out. So, for you guys, hang on to your manhood down there because you are better off with it attached then to have it as someone else’s neckless.

The film stars, Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Rasmus Hardiker and Zooey Deschanel among lots of others standing out. This film is courtesy from the director of Pineapple Express so right off the bat you know which direction we are heading.

The film opens with Prince Thadeus (McBride, “The Pineapple Express”) hanging around in a dwarf village and about ready for the floor to give out so the rope can stretch his neck. But a math error about the rope length sets him free. This enables him and his sidekick, Courtney (Hardiker, “Lead Balloon”) to be escape with Thadeus’ brother (Franco, “127 Hours”) back at the kingdom where he has successfully returned from defeating the evil wizard Leezar (Theroux) and reunited with his finance Belladonna (Deschanel).

At the celebration of Fabious’ quest, and wedding, Leezar returns with a vengeance, kidnaps the bride and intends to impregnate her. When the twin moons come together, or as he refers to it as, ‘The Fuckening’. Once again Fabious must set out on another quest, but this time to rescue his virgin bride. Thadeous is given the chance to man up on the quest or exit the kingdom. So the magical journey begins to search for the unicorn sword with the help from a compass that will destroy Leezar and will test their strength and courage, especially Thadeous’ as they face wizards, multiple headed dragons and a horny minotaur in the midst of maze. And I do mean horny. Whew! That was one of many sexually perverted scenes that will cause you to take a double look. There is another scene involving Toby Jones that certainly will make you say “What?”

But wait there is more. They encounter a village of topless, savage, women and a mysterious vixen Isabel (Natilie Portman, “Black Swan”, “No Strings Attached”) with nothing but vengeance on her mind. Wait until you see her take a swim. But I noticed as critical as I am, each time she or others were involved in many fight scenes, or even after getting out of the water. Cut to the next scene with hair and makeup perfectly in tact. Great continuity. There is a scene though involving a trophy from the minotaur that Thadeous proudly wears around his neck.

On their journey they have a run in with the three witchy bitches with spells and smoke to amaze the greatest magician. There is a mechanical bird, Simon, that reminds me of the one in “Clash of the Titans” which the movie has some elements of, but in a respectful way. There is a little “Conan”, “Beastmaster” and “Willow” that is played homage to but again with respect. And it works thanks to director David Gordon Green. The main lead, Franco, does wonderfully here and even his gay innuenos help this film to right up there with “Tropic Thunder”. Together McBride and him make a great team who always have each other’s backs. Even when betrayed by most of their own men. All this to save their land. But can Thadeous find his inner courage and be the hero he yearns to be?

“Your Highness” is rated R for everything you expect to see from the makers of Pineapple Express. Although a little overkill with the ‘dick’ jokes, it still worked and should be very much a contender for a special effects reward. It opens in theaters April 8, 2011 and is a Universal release. The comedy runs 102 minutes.
